Farm Updates

It has been quite awhile since I blogged about the farm.  We have entered the phase of farming where everything goes into hibernation for the winter.  We have done alot of work getting ready for the cold weather of winter.  Brandon has been busy making sure everyone will be comfortable in the freezing cold of the coming months.  Everything is set, and now, we wait.

Other than getting ready for winter, here are a couple of items worth mentioning. My hens have started laying eggs again.  This makes me so happy!!  We go through alot of eggs normally, and I have been rationing them. I had to break down an buy a couple dozen during the dry spell.  Now we are back to about 2 dozen a week.  The younger hens should start laying pretty soon also, and we are anticipating about 5 dozen a week starting in the spring.

Precious and Trixie are doing very well in their pregnancies.  Precious is about 85 days in as a second freshener, and Trixie is at 34 days as a first freshener. I have been watching Precious for changes in her udder.  So far, no change yet that I have noticed, but I'm keeping an eye on it.   Speaking of changes, I was out in the barn watching our two kittens jump around and climb on top of the goat pens.  I noticed something was different with our little orange kitten, Sparta.  I got up and examined her more closely and ALAS she is a male!!  I don't know how we didn't realize it sooner, but we had always thought he was a female.  I guess some things you just take for granted.  Our son, Cameron, who named Sparta, agreed that Sparta was still a good name for a tomcat.
